Call to Artists!

Public Art for Mercy Housing Affordable Housing Development in North Auburn
Mercy Housing

Proposal deadline for both Calls to Artists is June 18, 2021

Mercy Housing is currently constructing a 79-unit affordable housing project at Bell Road and First Street in North Auburn, adjacent to the Placer County Government Center. Mercy Housing is seeking to include public art as part of their development as the organization has a history of including art in their housing complexes.
Both Mercy Housing and the Mary Ann Flemmer Arts and Environment Fund at Placer Community Foundation are providing the funds for this project. Placer Community Foundation has been an instrumental advocate for increased affordable housing in Placer County. Mercy Housing and other key stakeholders seek to commission an artist or team of artists to create two public art projects in the development.

Sculpture Project

The sculpture will be placed in a prominent area near the Mercy Housing access point on First Street near Bell Road. The sculpture, which will be visible from Bell Road, will be a recognizable landmark for residents of the housing complex as well the surrounding community and make the area attractive, welcoming and dynamic.

Community Room & Patio Project

This Public Art project is in and adjacent to the Community Building, the major gathering spot in the complex. It has two parts, an interior wall of the Community Room and an associated project on the outdoor patio adjacent to the Community Building. The interior wall section of the Community Room where art is to be placed is well lit by skylights and windows high on the wall. The art could consist of metal, glass, wood, mosaic, a painted mural or other appropriate medium. The outdoor project is conceived as a community involvement project, to be completed by residents and community members. Art on the two designated walls could consist of murals, mosaic or other medium.
